Fishing for sustainablility: Fishmongers unload freshwater rohu fish at the Baho San Pya fish market in Kyimyindine township, Yangon. The government has outlined some measures to be followed by fish farmers for boosting fishery production, sources with the Fishery Department said on July 27. The measures include releasing enough fingerlings into creeks and rivers to increase production of quality strains and avoiding catching fish and prawns with eggs during the rainy season. To prevent the extinction of fish and prawns in Myanmar waters, the department has prohibited off-shore and deep-sea fishing in Rakhine, Mon, Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi states and divisions during the rainy season, the sources said. The fishery sector is the country's third largest contributor to gross domestic product, accounting for about eight percent of GDP. – Xinhua
