THE most powerful cyclone to hit Yangon in half a century ripped through Hlaing Tharyar township on April 28, damaging property and leaving more than 3300 people homeless.

 

The family is staying at a monastery in the village along with dozens of others left homeless. Her husband pushes handcarts for a living, and like many in the village, the family has no money for rebuilding.

 
Three days after the storm, only two beachfront hotels were open, the Golden Beach Hotel and Shwe Hin Tha Hotel. Several guesthouses off the beach had also reopened. Managers at several beachfront hotels said they expected to reopen this week.
 

MYANMAR and Iran plan to establish a joint commission to hold discussions on bilateral issues, Iranian ambassador Mr Mohsen Pak-Ayeen said last week. Mr Pak-Ayeen said an agreement to establish the commission was due to be signed later this year.

 

“Diseases occur not only in birds but also in fish, and nobody can say when a deadly outbreak will occur,” said Myanmar Fish Farmers Association chairman U Than Lwin. “Preparation for prevention is important.”

 

Mr Raza, who assumed his new post in Yangon in March, said in an interview with The Myanmar Times on April 28 that the UNODC was planning to expand its program in Myanmar to provide alternative development assistance for former opium farmers in Shan State.

A SURVEY of knowledge about traffic rules launched last month by the Traffic Police Force in Yangon has found that many drivers have limited understanding of road regulations.

 

OFFICIALS from the Yangon Division Buses Control Committee (Yangon and Highway) are urging bus workers and passengers to be alert for suspicious packages on public transport and in bus terminals.

 

“We plan to establish the Myanmar Tea Entrepreneurs Association under the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) by the end of this year,” said U Aye Win, who manufactures Flying Dragon tea products and is involved in the formation of the association.

 
“After privatisation, the operations at the rice mills will be simplified and more efficient,” said U Aung Than Oo, an official with Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading (MAPT) under the Ministry of Commerce, which currently owns about 70 rice mills in Myanmar.
 

One place that has caught the attention of many of these travellers, particularly those who love flowers, is the mountain resort town of Pyin Oo Lwin, a one-hour drive away from Mandalay.

 

TRIPS to elephant camps have long been popular among travellers to Thailand. With its own population of pachyderms, Myanmar has also started developing elephant tourism, but in a manner that differs from its neighbour to the east.

 

HIGH production costs and uncertainties about recovering these expenses are driving local television stations in Myanmar to rely on foreign programs to generate profits, said sources in the television broadcasting industry.
