Bringing in the Chinese new year with the Trees

By Kyaw Kyaw Tun
Yuzana thrilled the crowd with her performance

ON the night of February 6, to celebrate the Chinese new year, the Trees, led by more than 20 different singers performed at the Golden Dragon Hall Lion City Restaurant in Hlaing Township.

Sadly, the hall was only half filled, but those who were there were treated to a great concert.

In the western style, some stood at the front of the stage, so near that some bobby-soxers reached out their hands to touch their favourite singers. This meant that the audience who stayed seated couldn’t see very well.

The show started with new hip hop bands such as Orange, Ho and KFA who met with a mixed reception with only Orange really gripping the crowd.

Thenthe Trees kicked off with new young Kachin singer Daung Lun who almost caused a riot among his female fans _ more for his cuteness than his singing.

Thazin Thin, shaking her slim body, sang in a husky voice the hit Yone Tae Hoke (You believe, don’t you?) and really got the boys in the audience going.

Dwe, all in white, wowed the audience with a rendition of his famous song Min Lay Ko Chit Lo (Because I love you) and Telephone.

Maung Maung Zaw Latt joined Dwe when he sang Hmaw Lint Chin Myar Swar (For much hope) which was dedicated to HIV/AIDS patients.

Old-time rocker Kaung Set, also took the stage - the first time this year he has appeared live.

Min Oo, the Trees’ lead guitarist, backed Yuzana with a strong acoustic guitar.

Her songs such as Padi Pakha (Conflict) and Ko Koe Ko (To my darling) stood out as crowd-pleasers.

When Peanut Butter’s main vocalist Min Maw Kun, who is also an actor, took off his shirt to perform their hit Ma Chaw Tat Taw Bu (Don’t know how to please you), the girls all screamed with delight.

Although the audience seemed enthusiastic some were less than pleased. One man said, “Too many new singers and hip-hop groups. And the show started very late.”
