Local rockers love reggae

By Kyaw Kyaw Tun

ROCKER Chit Kaung was the rocker who brought reggae to Myanmar.

His popular hits Chit Phu De (Have been in love) and Tayauk Htae Lar (Are you alone?) were reggae style and it was these two which first brought him fame.

He said he has always been crazy for reggae. “From the time I first heard Bob Marley I have been excited about this music. Reggae is very free and it has its own style. I liked it a lot, I still do. I have released more than 20 reggae songs.”

Win Min Htway, the famous songwriter loves reggae and says it has influenced his songwriting style. “Reggae is great. It makes you want to get up and move – it’s very good to dance to.

“I like Bob Marley’s music. Most of his songs were about politics and their discriminated life rather than love. I like both their lyrics and melody,” he said.

“In fact, jazz and blues both derive from reggae music.”
