Bicycle factories upgraded

By Khin Hninn Phyu

MACHINERY installed in two bicycle factories operated by the Ministry of Industry (1) will cut production costs by up to 35 per cent and lead to cheaper prices for consumers, a senior official said.

The deputy manager of the ministry’s factory at Kyaukse in Mandalay Division, U San Nyunt, said the machinery had been financed under a US$4 million soft loan from India.

It had covered the cost of machinery bought from India’s Samra International company that can make all 24 parts needed to make a bicycle, eliminating the need for imports, he said.

The machinery was installed last month at the factories at Kyaukse and Yangon and was due to go into commercial operation in April, U San Nyunt said.

He said 20 technicians each from the two factories had completed 45 days training in operating the machinery at Samra International’s plant at Ludhiana last month.

U San Nyunt said machinery from Samra International able to make seven bicycle parts was installed in the factories under an initial $1.3 million soft loan provided by India in 2001.
