MYANMAR is making greater progress in providing clean water supplies and improving sanitation and hygiene, the country representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Ms Caroll Long, told a workshop in Yangon on October 7.

Speaking at the opening of the two-day workshop at the Dusit Inya Lake Resort hotel, Ms Long said the achievements in the three areas were a tribute to those involved.

“At the heart of all of our work to provide Myanmar’s families with clean water and a hygienic environment is our desire to save children’s lives and enhance people’s health,” she said.

 

THE importance of human resources development to promote quality health care was highlighted by the Health Minister, Dr Kyaw Myint, in a speech to open a training course in Yangon on October 4.Dr Kyaw Myint said the quality of health care services would be improved through a combination of highly qualified staff and the use of modern equipment.

A SENIOR Health Ministry official says there needs to be greater public awareness about the consequences of drinking water containing high concentrations of fluoride.The deputy director of the Department of Health Planning, Dr Khin Maung Lwin, said small amounts of fluoride in drinking water were useful for preventing tooth decay.

ANOTHER three ministries were preparing to adopt the e-procurement system, one in a series of online government projects, after nine ministries successfully completed an operational trial of the system on July 31, the coordinator of the project said.

 

THE crime rate has fallen sharply since the Myanmar Police Force established a committee in 1996 to create greater public awareness about criminal activity, a senior official with the Ministry of Home Affairs said last week.

 

ROUTES for a proposed railway network linking Asia and Europe and involving Myanmar were expected to be finalised later this year, a senior official from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific said last month.
