THE cooperation of domestic financial institutions is necessary to help identify money laundered by international criminals, said an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Police Colonel Sit Aye, the director of the ministry’s International Relations Department, said financial institutions were obliged, under a law enacted in June 2002 to control money laundering, to report their clients’ fiscal activities.

The law requires financial institutions to report any cash transactions in excess of K100 million or any other suspicious account activity to the ministry’s Central Control Board, which then investigates to determine their legality.

 

THE Department of Medical Research under the Ministry of Health is planning to begin production of hepatitis B vaccine by the end of the year, a senior official said last week.A factory at Hlegu, about 26 miles north of Yangon, will make about seven million doses of hepatitis B vaccine a year, said the head of the production facility, Dr Khin Pyone Kyi.

A SENIOR Health Ministry official says there needs to be greater public awareness about the consequences of drinking water containing high concentrations of fluoride.The deputy director of the Department of Health Planning, Dr Khin Maung Lwin, said small amounts of fluoride in drinking water were useful for preventing tooth decay.

U San Lin, a general manager at Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise, which helped organise the event, said the prizes will be awarded to private-sector farms and organisations whose work is related to agriculture, livestock and fisheries, and forestry.
