7-bedroom home at affordable price

By Khin Hninn Phyu
The large first-floor balcony is perfect for al fresco dining.

DOWN Parami Road past Hlaing university campus, the Myanmar Times House of the Week is an unusual – if slightly old – property on a large compound surrounded by greenery.

There is parking space at the front of the house with a front door, at the side facing out to Parami Road, a large French door covered by a portico.

Inside, a large yellow-tiled corridor leads to the rooms on the ground floor, the first being the living room immediately on the right. The room features large, teak-framed windows which light up the room and look out to the front of the property. From the outside, the teak and glass work dramatically enhance the house’s façade which is otherwise dominated by dull white and beige tiling.

The living room’s ceiling is an attractive piece of lined teak work which is, however, undermined by a chandelier – a fan, perhaps, would have been a more tasteful option.

The main master bedroom, which is situated just down the hallway on the ground floor, is spacious with a set of chairs and a coffee table at one end and a double bed at the other. The room, unlike the rest of the house, comes fully-furnished including a wardrobe, a desk, two bedside cabinets, a dressing table and even a safe. The room is also air-conditioned and includes an attached bathroom with bath tub decked out in pink tiling.

Next door lies a second master bedroom which also features an attached bathroom, this time in blue.

The dining room offers outdoor dining with doors that open out onto the garden, conveniently served by the kitchen, which is partitioned by a wall unit with a glass door through which food can be served.

There are no cooking facilities in the kitchen – a stove and fridge must be provided by the future tenant – but there are storage cupboards.

On the second floor, Buddhists will appreciate the shrine room which is lit up by an outside-facing wall all in glass.

The third master bedroom is situated near to the shrine room. Further down a side corridor lie two further bedrooms – one a single and the other a larger master bedroom at the end of the corridor. Through a short passage lie the sixth and seventh bedrooms. Nearby is an enormous covered balcony, which is directly above the living room and of about the same size. Again, the area would be perfect for eating outside.

This property would be ideal for large families on a budget, particularly those unconcerned about being a long way from central Yangon. Those looking for something neat and tidy though might find themselves doing a spot of Do-it-Yourself.
