A PARTNERSHIP between a British training centre and two Yangon
companies has enabled about 10,000 young Myanmar to obtain qualifications
in computer studies during the past 15 years.
Since 1993, the KMD Computer Co., Ltd., and Myanmar Computer
Co., Ltd., have provided training under which 9618 people have
qualified for internationally-recognised diplomas in computer
studies issued by Britain’s National Computer Centre.
The NCC, which has similar arrangements in other developing
countries, sets the examinations for the year-long diploma courses.
The British Council in Yangon arranges the exams each March, June,
September and December.
Those who receive the diplomas are eligible to continue their
studies at second-year level at more than 30 universities in Britain,
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, said NCC’s
Kuala Lumpur-based regional director for Southeast Asia, Ms Maria
Santagata.
“We want to provide equality in international education
for students in Myanmar and other developing countries,”
said Ms Santagata, who was in Yangon for a graduation ceremony
held at MICT Park on September 21 and 22 at which 300 students
received diplomas.
The KMD Computer company, which was founded in 1986 and has
its own diploma course, has provided training for more than 7000
people who have qualified for the NCC’s diplomas.
The chairman and chief executive officer of the KMD Company,
U Thaung Tin, said those who held internationally-recognised certificates
had more chances of obtaining employment in Myanmar and overseas.
The diploma courses were also praised by U Tin Win Aung, the
president and chief executive officers of the MCC, which was established
in 1989 and has trained more than 2000 NCC diploma holders.
“Myanmar needs thousands of qualified personnel for computer
enterprises,” said U Tin Win Aung.
He said demand was expected to rise because of e-government
projects and plans by the government to link every township to
the internet next year.
The ceremony also marked the graduation of the first group of
students in Myanmar to receive a degree issued by the NCC.
