Historical Background
Numbers of Departments and State Economic Enterprises have increased after Myanmar gained Independence and Budget Department has been formed as a division of Ministry of Finance and Revenue in 1958. In 1972, as part of new administration programme of the Union of Myanmar, Budget Department has been formed as a separate agency under the Ministry of Planning and Finance. The Ministry of Planning and Finance got segregated into Ministry of Finance and Revenue and the Ministry of National Planning & Economic Development in 17-2-93. Since then, Budget Department has been one of the Administrative Department under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue.
Functions
The Budget Department formulates and implements Annual State Budget within a macroeconomic framework under the guidance of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue for a given period. Although Budgets are for specific financial years, in practice Budgetary is continuous and is so undertaken in the spending agencies and in the Ministry of Finance and Revenue to fulfill the three main functions of the budget - allocation, stabilization and evaluation.
