The
Population Changes and Fertility Survey (PCFS) was conducted in 1991
and it would be useful to conduct FRHS in year 2001. It has particular relevance
since there have been no decennial censuses of population after 1983 in Myanmar.
The 1997 FRHS served as the mid-period survey and although it missed the mid
point by a few months and instead was conducted in early 1997. Both 1991 PCFS
and the 1997 FRHS served a great purpose in filling the gap in knowledge. Further,
the 1997 FRHS obtained for the first time information on RTI, STD, HIV/AIDS
at the national level. This survey had not only obtained quality information
of acceptable level but also proved that it is possible to obtain such sensitive
data through cross sectional surveys. The results have been corroborated, when
possible, by information from other sources. FRHS 2001 could be extended further
to various other aspects of Reproductive Health.
One
of the key activities that need to be conducted in preparation for such a survey
is a revision of the sampling plan. It involves two tasks: an updating of the
sample frame; and mapping of the sampled areas. The Population Council has provided
a sub-award to the Department of Population to undertake these activities. The
Population Council's Technical Advisor in Yangon monitored the progress of activities.
To increase the information base for Reproductive Health in all its components
and thereby contribute to the promotion of RH in Myanmar
