The Detailed Analysis on FRHS Surveys is based on data from two nationally representative sample surveys –the Population Changes and Fertility Survey (PCFS) undertaken in 1991 and the Fertility and Reproductive Health Survey (FRHS) conducted in 1997. Both surveys were conducted by the Department
of Population of the Ministry of Immigration and Population, Myanmar. Those surveys were conducted to a high standard and the resulting reports, published
in 1996 and 1999, provided a wealth of information on the prevailing demographic and reproductive health situation in Myanmar.
However, there remained the potential for further analysis on some topics, in particular on: households ; nuptiality; fertility preference; contraception for “spacers” and “limiters” and the related unmet need. Accordingly, detailed
analysis was undertaken with further support from UNFPA and with an international consultant being funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (through the Population Council).
The results are both interesting and informative. Detailed analysis not only adds important information to the national data base but also assists health managers in determining priorities for reproductive health interventions in the more needy areas.
The detailed analysis has been undertaken entirely by the national staff of the Department of Population, Ministry of Immigration and Population, with technical assistance from the international consultant. Personnel from the Ministry of Health and from other RH-related national organizations, Population Council and UNFPA contributed to the interpretation of the results at a workshop organized by the Department of Population.
